Did you actually get to do punting where you visited Cambridge?
Yes, studying, growing intellectually of course is the main goal of attending college, but the campus life is another component that's all too important to be overlooked. You can make a lot of friends that way (or vice versa), but it could also be very distracting. How you want your college life to be is all based on choices. Some people can be studying at these really historical colleges but still miss out on all those things you mentioned.
I guess as always, the "where" is not the most important; it's the "how".
